How to Bootstrap Your Marketing When Starting Out as a Solo Contractor

Starting out on your own as a solo contractor requires a lot of gumption, and the ability to sell yourself. When it is just you running all of the roles of the business, it may be difficult to have a fully fleshed-out marketing plan. Even without marketing expertise, there are so many effective ways to market yourself.

Stay Active on Social Media

Having an active social media presence is an important and easy way to market your business. Make sure you have a social media account for all of the major platforms, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Depending on your target audience, you may choose to be more active on certain platforms over others. These different platforms all require a slightly different voice, and certain posts that might work well on Instagram, would not be appropriate on LinkedIn.

Brand Your Vehicle

Branding your vehicle with your business and services is a great way to advertise when you’re driving around town. If you don’t want to spend the money on a new paint job, a truck wrap can be more cost-effective. Truck wraps are nonpermanent vinyl decals that can be customized with your name, logo, contact information, and whatever else you may want to wrap your whole vehicle. This is an easy way to get the attention of potential clients from driving around town or parking in parking lots.

Optimize Your Website

One of the most important ways to improve your success as an independent contractor is having a great website. At a minimum, your website should include a few key pages. First, you should have an About Us page that talks about who you are and tells the origin story of your business. You should also include a services page that lists what services you offer. Provide options on your webpage for your clients to purchase directly from this page. You should also include a Contact webpage so potential clients can reach you. It is easy to launch your own website on a platform like WordPress.

Your marketing strategy may be simple at first, but simple moves can be highly effective. Make sure you have a strong online presence through your website and social media, and do not be afraid to tell people about your services in the real world too. A DIY marketing strategy when you’re just getting started is key to building your brand and ensuring future success.
