If you have an eye for detail, enjoy event planning, and can keep a cool head during stressful situations, then the wedding industry might be just right for you. The wedding industry is booming with nearly 3 million weddings happening every year in the United States alone. It is also a highly rewarding career choice to play a major role in a couple’s big day. If you think the wedding industry might be right for you, you can get your start with these three steps.

Build a Network

Careers in hospitality require a solid network of vendors, suppliers, and contacts. This is especially true in the wedding industry. Weddings require a host of different skill sets, and having contacts for each of them will give your business a head start. As you build your network, look for caterers, florists, DJs, musicians, and more. Your relationships with other skilled professionals in the industry will make your business stand out. It’s also helpful to have people you trust to refer to your clients. Furthermore, your contacts should be able to get you some good referrals as well. 

Decide Your Focus

Next, you need to decide on your area of focus. If you want to be involved in the entire process you should consider becoming a wedding planner or event coordinator. Event coordinators help people throughout the planning process of their weddings. Otherwise, you can narrow your niche. Maybe you want to do catering. You might be interested in providing the alcohol. Maybe you are a talented interior designer and would rather focus on the decor. Or, photography might be more your thing. All of these niches can offer lucrative careers.

Spread the Word

Now that you have your game plan it is time to get the word out. The wedding industry is highly dependent on word of mouth and personal references, so start with the people you know. You can offer your services at a discounted rate to friends and family and ask them to spread the word. Social media is a great way to get your name out there for free. You can also ask wedding gown shops and tuxedo rental companies if you can advertise at their business. 

The wedding industry is fast-paced, diverse, and rewarding. It does, however, take some self-marketing. Get your name out there at every opportunity. With time, you should be able to grow your business beyond what you ever thought possible.
