Personal mission statement will have a positive influence on your life

Making a personal mission statement enables you to clarify in specific words what you want, what you don’t and where you’re going. Companies use it for having a clear vision of their purpose and what they want to accomplish in the future. So why wouldn’t you do the same with your own life?

Whether it’s a daily mantra or a quote to return to when times get tough, having a personal mission statement brings focus and purpose to your life.

Do you want to know how to build your own personal statement? Here’s how. Go grab pencil & paper and let’s get to work. Remember, don’t judge yourself. Just be honest and clear.

Look back for one moment. What have you done in the past? What are the things that have brought you the most joy in your life? Also what lessons have you learned from your failures?

Then, take a look at yourself. Make a list of your good qualities. What are your distinguishing marks?

Afterwards, think. What drives you to be better? In what way do you want to make this world a better place?

Take a deep breath for what’s next. Draft a raw perspective of your future. Don’t be specific, just be sure to have in mind a couple of things you’d like to do.

Then, write all these things down and cut out the less important stuff. How to know what things to leave? Only you know that. My personal advice, go with your heart. There are matters where your gut knows best. This is one of those.

Find the fun! Be creative!

Crafting a mission statement shouldn’t be something boring. Make sure you are providing the creative spark for it. Get out of the box.

You could even take inspiration from some of your favorite quotes, songs or books. One of many really good mission statements is the following one by Oprah Winfrey:

“To be a teacher. And to be known for inspiring my students

to be more than they thought they could be.”

As you can see, this statement does not show a specific goal. But it truly shows what Oprah seeks in life and what she knows is expected of her.

Nothing is set in stone

As we go through life, we all change. So the obvious thing is that your feelings and thoughts also do. This is why your mission statement might not always be the same. In fact, I discourage that it remains the same.

Change is good. Change makes you better. Besides, if your mission statement doesn’t change, you risk not being relevant anymore.

For example, my own mission statement right now is:

Fail, learn, grow and be grateful and humble. Be the change you want to see in the world!
