If your business includes a factory setting, it is important to understand the risks associated with factories. When you understand the risks, you are better able to mitigate them. Here are three potential risks in a factory setting.
Heavy Machinery
While it might seem obvious that heavy machinery needs to be handled with care, some people don’t seem to get the message. Heavy machinery is a potential hazard for the person handling the equipment as well as everyone around them. Before anyone handles the heavy machinery in your factory, make sure they receive adequate operator training. In addition to understanding the ins and outs of the specific machine, workers must be trained to operate in a clear space, inspect the equipment before each use, and only use the machinery for its intended purpose. Furthermore, workers should be instructed to always wear the personal protective equipment necessitated by each machine. This might include protective eyewear, insulated gloves, helmets, face shields, or ear plugs.
Pipe Systems
Most people don’t think twice about the pipe systems within any given building, but pipes form a critical part of the infrastructure. This is especially true in a factory. Each piping system within your factory must be up to code for the material running through them. Factory pipe systems will generally require a piping engineer to outline the needed specifications regarding the installation, insulation, and piping grades of any given pipe. Special consideration will be required for all hazardous materials, including those that are extreme temperatures, flammable, pressurized, or corrosive. Pipes that transport hazardous materials need to be labeled to properly inform employees. The American National Standards Institute has developed a labeling method for industrial pipe systems. Using this labeling tool can guide you as you properly label your pipes.
Accidents
People seem to invent new ways of getting hurt all the time, though these often fall into the same few categories. In a factory setting, there is the potential for falls, slips, burns, cuts, and more. You can prevent these accidents in several ways. You can properly label all hazardous areas, as well keep your floors clean, dry, and free of debris. And finally, provide your workers with the proper protective equipment, wash stations, and safety training. Do everything you can to help your factory to be an accident-free zone.
If you have a factory setting at your business, know the risks and do everything you can to mitigate them. Take extra caution with your heavy machinery, your pipe systems, and implementing general safety protocols. No one ever regrets making the work environment too safe!
